Despite Katie's attempts to keep the two apart, they end up in bed together. Tarantino would also give Butters, who likes to write short films, tips about filmmaking, even organizing a reading of one of her shorts with the cast at the end of the shoot.Katie's father Marty arrives unexpectedly for the holidays, not knowing that his ex-wife Kathryn is living there. Whenever a roll of 35-mm film would finish, production would stop and celebrate with drinks (Butters had sparkling apple juice) and a live mariachi band. Actors are forbidden from using their phones on set, forcing everyone to connect in real life. ![]() “And boy, did I wake up with a bruise on my hands the next day, holy cow.”įor any actor, working on a Tarantino set comes with unusual quirks and perks. She did her own stunts, thank you very much. ![]() “Leo actually came up with the idea the day we were filming, like ‘hey…how about I throw this child on the floor?’” DiCaprio, of course, didn’t literally toss her down he just let go, and Butters dramatically threw herself at the ground. Apparently the toss was DiCaprio’s idea, Butters said, retelling the story with a comedian’s panache. In one scene, Dalton plays a villain who kidnaps Trudi-and, in a shocking moment, throws her to the ground. Crazy.”īutters’s character spends most of her time verbally sparring with Rick Dalton, going back and forth about their views on acting and their opinion of the project on which they costar. “He had a really nice house,” Butters observed, noting that it had “a view of basically the entire world-you could see the ocean, you could see buildings. She liked Lancer, though.ĭiCaprio, who is Butters’s scene partner for the majority of her screen time, first met her at the cast table read, then invited her (and her parents) to his house to run lines. “I actually didn’t watch Westerns before I made the movie, and I don’t really watch them now,” she said, laughing. Trudi was actually inspired by a character in the 1968 Western series Lancer, which Tarantino asked Butters to watch before coming to set. “I’m so happy that he did -and so mad that he did at the same time.” But the little actor doesn’t mind the comparison. “I’m like ‘Guys, she was 20!’ And I’m 10! There’s a 10-year difference,” Butters said exuberantly in a recent phone interview (accompanied on the line by her mother, Lorelei). It comes as no surprise that, in a press interview, DiCaprio compared the actor to a young Meryl Streep-which, somehow, has been misconstrued into reporters assuming Butters is actually playing a young Meryl Streep in the 1969-set film. In character, Butters is magnetic and shrewd, handily stealing the spotlight from her seasoned, Oscar-winning costar while delivering classic Tarantino-penned dialogue. ![]() In Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, the 10-year-old plays Trudi, a precocious child actor on a Western set who intellectually wallops Rick Dalton ( Leonardo DiCaprio) over the course of a brief, startling conversation. There’s something special about Julia Butters. ![]()
